Funded by the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Homeless Veterans Provider Technical Assistance Center (TAC) of the Governor's Institute on Alcohol and Substance Abuse will offer a series of free grant writing workshops in August and September. The workshops will provide participants the skills needed to prepare a Grant and Per Diem (GPD) and Per Diem Only application. On the first day, instructors will address the VA GPD Program. On the second day, instructors will focus on developing a budget using OMB Circulars. Workshops are scheduled in Report on How Foreclosures Contributed to Homelessness in 2008 Released "Foreclosure to Homelessness: The Forgotten Victims of the Subprime Crisis" provides insight into the contribution that foreclosures had on homeless populations in 2008. The report – compiled by the National Coalition for the Homeless, the National Alliance to End Homelessness, the National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth, the National Health Care for the Homeless Council, the National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty, the National Low Income Housing Coalition, and the National Policy and Advocacy Council on Homelessness – discusses the plight faced by a growing number of renters and homeowners who have been affected by the foreclosure crisis and rendered homeless after exhausting their resources. Interactive Database Compares Wages with Housing Costs in Over 200 The Center for Housing Policy, the research affiliate of the National Housing Conference, has published Paycheck to Paycheck, an online, interactive database that presents wage information for more than 60 occupations and home prices and rents for more than 200 metropolitan areas. The study also looks at trends in affordability for 199 homeownership markets and trends in rents in 27 areas. Paycheck to Paycheck determines that many American workers cannot affordably live in the communities they serve. Workers in more expensive areas or in lower-wage occupations, for instance, cannot afford to rent a two-bedroom apartment. Meanwhile, traditional community workers, such as police officers, elementary school teachers, nurses, janitors and retail workers, cannot affordably rent apartments for their families. Online Training Available for HUD's Homeless Assistance Application and Grants Management System HUD's Office of Special Needs Assistance Programs has announced the availability of a training curriculum for e-snaps, the electronic application and grants management system that allows Continuums of Care (CoCs) to prepare and submit their applications to SNAPs electronically. E-snaps, furthermore, streamlines the application submission and review process, as well as minimizes data entry errors. HUD strongly encourages CoCs to submit their registrations no later than August 25. Click here to view a training module, set up as a slideshow, that will help you prepare and submit your CoC registration.
