$40 Million in HUD-VASH Available to Support Approximately 5,000 New Vouchers

Registrations of Interest due by midnight August 19, 2019 in the time zone of the partnering Public Housing Agency.

Today the U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT announced the availability of $40 million in HUD-VASH that will support approximately 5,000 new vouchers. These vouchers are administered in partnership with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and enable homeless veterans and their families to access affordable housing and supportive services.

The HUD-VASH program combines HUD Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) rental assistance for homeless veterans with case management and clinical services provided by local VA Medical Centers (VAMCs), community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs), or other entities as designated by the Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs. The VA medical facility refers all eligible HUD-VASH families to the partnering Public Housing Agency (PHA).

Of note to veteran affordable housing projects currently in the development pipeline, this announcement specifically noted the option for any PHA to convert, tenant-based awards to project-based awards at any time after allocation without HUD approval, if the PHA meets the project-based vouchers requirements. Click here for further guidance on this issue.

As a general note, NCHV recommends that service providers and affordable housing developers communicate perceived needs to their partnering PHA and local VAMC as soon as possible to inform their registration of interest.

Both the PHA and VAMC will be required to submit letters of interest in order to be eligible for a voucher allocation in this round. If, as in previous years, you are hearing that your local VAMC is not supportive of the PHA's registration of interest, please let NCHV know as soon as possible by emailing

Registrations of Interest are due by midnight August 19, 2019 in the time zone of the partnering Public Housing Agency.
