New HVRP Fact Sheet on Asset Building Released
Posted: 9/16/2009
The National Technical Assistance Center at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) has released its seventh Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program (HVRP) Fact Sheet. Fact Sheet #7, titled "Asset Building: A Hand Up Out of Poverty for Homeless Veterans," describes asset building, which is an anti-poverty strategy that helps low-income people accumulate savings and purchase long-term assets. For homeless veterans, this can amplify the motivation to seek and retain employment.
Aside from detailing the advantages of asset building, the fact sheet also defines the Assets for Independence Program and Individual Development Accounts (IDAs). The following people are eligible for these services:
§ Anyone who is eligible for the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) or the Federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)
§ Individuals and families with income less than two times the Federal poverty line
§ Individuals and families whose net asset wealth, not including one automobile and a home, is $10,000 or less when they enroll in an AFI Project
