Study Says OEF/OIF Vets Less Inclined to Treat PTSD

Posted: 9/17/2009

The VA's National Center for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) recently highlighted a study that posits Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF) veterans have problems with treatment adherence – that is to say, extra efforts are needed to enroll these veterans for mental health care, which is no promise that they will even follow through with their appointments. The study, called "Treatment presentation and adherence of Iraq/Afghanistan-era veterans in outpatient care for post-traumatic stress disorder," used data from 106 OEF/OIF and 54 Vietnam-era veterans at a Minneapolis outpatient Veterans Affairs Medical Center PTSD clinic. Its authors indicate that short-term treatments and motivational enhancement interventions are potential remedies, but more evidence is needed.
