Free Webinar: Using Legal Services for Homelessness Prevention
Posted: 9/21/2009
Date: Wednesday, September 23, 2009
Time: 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM EDT
While legal services organizations can play an important role in preventing evictions and helping clients obtain entitlements that can help prevent or end homelessness, such efforts are not always integrated with other homelessness prevention efforts in local communities.
The federal Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program (HPRP) has provided an important opportunity to integrate legal services into homelessness prevention activities and build new collaborative efforts that can result in better client outcomes. Although HPRP is only authorized for two years, recently enacted changes to the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act will continue authorization for homelessness prevention activities, including legal services, under the newly renamed Emergency Solutions Grant program (formerly known as the Emergency Shelter Grant program).
To help nonprofits, local governments and legal services organizations strategize about how best to use new ESG funds, this webinar will provide an overview of legal services organizations' homelessness prevention activities under HPRP in three communities around the country.
Topics to be addressed include examples of how collaborations between legal services organizations, local governments, and homeless service providers can improve identification of clients at risk and provide a more complete range of homeless prevention services to keep clients in housing; as well as how legal services address administrative requirements such as complying with data reporting requirements while still protecting client confidentiality.
