Homeless Vets to Get Housed on Health Care Campus in Sepulveda, CA

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki has announced an agreement with local homeless providers in Sepulveda, California, which will ensure veterans occupy 150 apartments created on the campus of the local Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care facility.

“This modification of the lease will remove any uncertainty on the part of the community and veterans that this housing will be only for veterans,” Secretary Shinseki said. “These new facilities will ensure veterans who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless have the permanent housing and supportive services they need.”

The announcement affected a lease signed on Dec. 21, 2007, between the VA and two providers of homeless services – New Directions, Inc., and Community of Friends. The VA continues to work with the homeless service providers so they can obtain all necessary financing toward completion of the Sepulveda project.

In exchange for leasing two buildings on the grounds of the Sepulveda health care facility to the homeless agencies, the VA received a pledge from the nonprofit organizations to give veterans priority for placement in the apartments. However, non-veterans were originally eligible to use facilities and services not being used by veterans.
