IAVA Publishes Issue Report on Women Warriors
Posted: 10/19/2009
Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) has published an issue report called “Women Warriors: Supporting She ‘Who Has Borne the Battle.’” The report is driven by the lack of necessary support for women veterans, whose numbers are rapidly growing. The VA, however, the report contends, is “still underprepared to provide adequate care to the surge of female veterans.”
The report features a section on “Underemployment and Homelessness,” which weighs the significance of several facts, including:
- The VA estimates there are 13,100 homeless female veterans
- Women veterans are up to four times more likely to be homeless than non-veteran women
- Female veterans on average earn almost $10,000 less per year than male veterans
- 23 percent of female veterans in the VA’s homelessness programs have children under 18 years old
