DOJ Announces Second Chance Act Mentoring Grants

The Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of Justice Programs, Bureau of Justice Assistance has announced that it is seeking applications for funding for mentoring grants to nonprofit organizations under the Second Chance Act. Section 211 of the Act authorizes grants to nonprofit organizations and federally recognized Indian tribes that may be used for mentoring projects to promote the safe and successful reintegration of adults who have been incarcerated.
The Act requires that recidivism be a measure of success in funded programs. Additionally, each proposal must include the following program components:
- Mentoring offenders during incarceration, through transition back to the community and post-release.
- Transitional services to assist in the reintegration of offenders into the community
- Training regarding offender and victims issues
There is an award ceiling of $300,000. The deadline to apply is March 18, 2010.
