HUD and VA Announce $33 Million Expansion of HUD-VASH Program

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) have announced $33 million in new funding for the HUD–Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program, expanding housing assistance for Veterans experiencing homelessness across the country.

The funding will support 2,532 new HUD-VASH vouchers that will be distributed through 265 Public Housing Authorities (PHAs) in 44 states. HUD also announced an additional $10 million in administrative funding for 289 PHAs in 46 states to support voucher leasing and improve program delivery.

HUD-VASH is a joint initiative between HUD and VA that combines Housing Choice Voucher rental assistance with case management and supportive services provided by the VA. The program helps Veterans experiencing homelessness obtain and maintain stable, permanent housing.

The announcement comes as Veteran homelessness has declined by 56.1% since 2010, with HUD-VASH playing a significant role in that progress. Today, more than 118,000 HUD-VASH vouchers are active nationwide, and since the program launched in 2008, more than 250,000 Veterans have secured safe, stable, and affordable housing through the program.

In announcing the funding, HUD Secretary Scott Turner said the investment will help provide housing resources to more than 2,500 Veterans experiencing homelessness. VA Secretary Doug Collins said the funding builds on the department’s efforts to house more than 51,000 Veterans last year.

HUD-VASH operates in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico through partnerships among Public Housing Authorities, VA medical centers, community-based outpatient clinics, and other VA service providers. By combining affordable housing assistance with supportive services, the program helps Veterans achieve long-term housing stability.
