Virtual Symposium on Serving Justice-Involved Individuals with Mental Health/Substance Use Disorders

Join the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and SAMHSA’s GAINS Center, for a virtual symposium, Making It Happen: Collaborative and Innovative Strategies to Ensure Access to Appropriate Services for Justice-Involved Individuals with Mental and Substance Use Disorders, that features national experts, local innovative programs, and readily accessible federal resources to better meet the needs of justice-involved individuals with mental and substance use disorders.

The symposium will take place on Friday, Dec. 14, and the schedule is as follows:

9:00-10:00 a.m.: Opening Remarks and Keynote Speaker - Assistant Secretary for Mental Health and Substance Use, Elinore F. McCance-Katz, M.D., Ph.D.; Renowned journalist/author and advocate, Mr. Pete Earley
10:00-10:45 a.m.: Building Bridges between Behavioral Health and Criminal Justice
10:45-11:45 a.m.: Panel 1: Creating Effective Partnerships to Prevent or Reduce Justice-Involvement among Individuals with Mental and Substance Use Disorders
12:30-1:30 p.m.: Panel 2: Crisis Response and Early Diversion
1:30-2:30 p.m.: Panel 3: Screening for Mental Illness and Substance Use Disorders in Jails/Detention Facilities
2:30-3:45 p.m.: Panel 4: Promoting Successful Community Re-entry

These panel presentations highlight SAMHSA’s Eight Principles of Community-based Behavioral Health Services for Justice-Involved Individuals, and The Sequential Intercept Model.
