The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has announced $1.17 billion in fiscal year 2027 grants to 680 organizations serving Veterans who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

The funding will support two VA programs, Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) and Grant and Per Diem (GPD). The grants are intended to support homelessness prevention, rapid re-housing, transitional housing, and other services that help Veterans move toward permanent housing.

$855 million for Supportive Services for Veteran Families

VA will award $855 million through the SSVF program. These one-year grants begin October 1, 2026.

SSVF organizations provide case management and supportive services to Veterans and their families, including:

  • Preventing the imminent loss of housing.
  • Helping Veterans and families identify new, more suitable housing.
  • Rapidly re-housing Veterans and families experiencing homelessness who may otherwise remain homeless without assistance.

$318 million for Grant and Per Diem

VA will award $318 million through the GPD program. These grants will run for three years beginning October 1, 2026.

GPD funding supports:

  • Transitional housing with supportive services and service centers.
  • Transition-in-place housing, which allows Veterans to remain in their current housing while receiving services to help them move toward permanent housing.
  • Specialized housing for Veterans with additional housing and service needs, including women Veterans and Veterans who are chronically mentally ill, frail, elderly, terminally ill, or caring for minor dependents.
