Employment

The National Coalition for Homeless Veterans (NCHV) Technical Assistance Center provides services and technical training to grantee programs, including the Department of Labor (DOL) Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program (HVRP).

This section is designed to direct veterans to agencies and organizations that can help them prepare for and obtain employment, and to support the efforts of employment specialists who are working with homeless veterans and those at risk of homelessness due to health, economic or other personal issues. Studies show that gainful employment at a livable wage, with opportunities for advancement, is the foundation for maintaining economic stability and reducing the risk of becoming homeless. Market factors such as layoffs, plant closings, high local rates of unemployment, and changes in a region’s commercial base that adversely impact the availability of jobs usually affect younger, less experienced workers the most, including young veterans who are attempting to re-enter the civilian work force after their discharge from military service.

The U.S. Department of Labor-Veterans' Employment and Training Service (DOL-VETS) is a key ally in helping veterans obtain meaningful careers, maximize their employment opportunities, and protect their employment rights. The agency, through a technical assistance grant, funds employment assistance provided by the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans (NCHV). The following links will guide you to employment resources that veterans need to find steady employment, along with other supportive services to ensure their success.

Current DOL-VETS Grantees
These grantees provide employment and other services to different veteran populations that are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

DOL Veteran Employment Services
DOL-VETS offers employment and training services to eligible veterans through a non-competitive Jobs for Veterans State Grants Program. This program funds two principal staff positions: Disabled Veterans' Outreach Program Specialists (DVOP) and Local Veterans' Employment Representatives (LVER). To search online for the DVOP and/or LVER closest to you, click here. You can find more information about the roles of DVOP/LVERs on this VETS Employment Services Fact Sheet.

Teleconferences
NCHV schedules conference calls on DOL grant programs, employment assistance, and many other topics relevant to serving homeless veterans. For upcoming calls and an archive of previous calls, visit the conference calls page.
