On June 28th, in the Grants Pass v Johnson case, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that it is not unconstitutional to penalize individuals for being homeless when safe alternatives are unavailable. This ruling allows local authorities to arrest and fine homeless individuals for camping or sleeping on public property, despite the fact that such penalties impede their ability to secure permanent housing. The U.S. Supreme Court's ruling on June 28th was deeply disheartening, as it concluded that the US Constitution does not afford homeless individuals protection from cruel and unusual punishment, even when they have no alternative but to sleep in public with basic necessities like blankets or pillows.
